An ordinary rat bearing a tiny camera scurries around an office building, recording its everyday activity without being noticed. We are in the Fish and Coal Building in London, a semi-derelict office building in full operation in the second half of the nineteenth and the early twentieth century. The rat wanders about in what looks like a 1900 office. The rat, a shadow of civilisation, lives among us, hiding from us, feeding on progress and detritus – a symbol of negative things yet man’s inseparable companion.
