Three Portrait Sketches

Year1951 Duration7 min. DirectorMargaret Tait WriterMargaret Tait EditorFernando Birri, Peter Hollander, Margaret Tait CastSergio Rusconi, Carmen Papio

Camera: Peter Hollander
Continuity: Fernando Birri

Another film from her student years. Her first portraits: a total of three, as quick sketches on a canvas, done at the speed of haiku. One minute, twenty seconds to portray Claudia, the girl with the water smile. Three and a half minutes for the filmmaker, Fernando Birri, Tait’s classmate at the Experimental Film Centre in Rome, and presented here as a talking statue. And two minutes, fifty seconds for Saulat Rahman, her friend from India, the woman who looks twice. Three portraits which are also a drawing of Tait’s first film: experimentation in editing, inserts, repetitions and slow camera.
