The Art of Flying

Year2015 Duration7 min. DirectorJan van Ijken

A hypnotising short film on the mysterious and suggestive flight of starlings in large flocks. Science has two great question marks over them: how do so many of them manage to fly without colliding at any time? And secondly: why do they always do it at dusk, as if they are waiting for man to have that more doubtful look that emerges in the twilight? The result of this plague-flight is the dance of a formless mass that creates changing shapes in the sky with the skill and malleability of a hive. The choreography is perfect: the flight of each one is the flight of all of them. None of them moves out of their line. And the sound, which is also so well captured by the filmmaker in the Dutch landscape, is a murmur of wings that may be interrupted at any moment.
