Le Battement d'ailes d'un papillon

Year2008 Duration64 min. DirectorAleksandr Balagura

Third film miracle: immortalise the memory. Everything is flight in this film full of unfinished films: aeroplanes over an unknown Kiev, seagulls in a long calm night and Muybridge’s pigeon flapping its wings in front of the camera which is repeated like a mantra. Aleksandr Balagura, the person responsible for joining all of these  flights, takes up a project from his youth 25 years ago, when he and several filmmaker friends decided to make a joint film that finally nobody carried out, until today. The Ukrainian filmmaker set out to finish this ghost film, but he is faced with two problems: some of the authors have disappeared and with them, the country in which they filmed. So there only remains flight as a metaphor and the memory of a friend for what was filmed. The memory works here like the beating of the wings of a butterfly, with its individual fragility but devastating effect when done all together.
