This lemons tastes of apple

Survivors of the massive gas attack in Northern Iraq in 1988 say the deadly chemicals smelled of apple. During the Arab uprisings, also taking place in the Kurdish region of Northern Iraq in 2011, civilian protest was bloodily repressed. The unrest saw the large-scale use of teargas. The protestors used lemons to counter its effects; another fruit smell which linked the citizens’ political memories. Hiwa K initiated a musical intervention to the melody of Morricone’s ‘Once upon a time in the West’.
