Islands of Forgotten Cinemas

Year2016 Duration35 min. DirectorIvan Ramljak

Meta-cinema in the Adriatic, witness to the sinking of the seventh art as a collective ritual. Among the remnants of what was once a popular cinema, the echo of a voice that remembers its prosperous past on the Croatian islands sounds. Through anecdotes and personal memories of the older locals, the sound layer nostalgically takes us back to a time when the cinema and its atmosphere were still the centre of society, a kind of party that was held in secret communion with darkness and its twin brother: mystery. In turn, the image discovers the new use of those spaces. Those that are not abandoned are now shooting ranges, testing facilities or yoga halls. It is a requiem for cinema as a collective experience and at the same time a celebration of its essence in constant metamorphosis with the world.
