Mothlight

Year1963 Duration4 min. DirectorStan Brakhage

First film miracle: animating what cannot be animated. The maestro Brakhage with his entomologic eye brings this collection of night butter fly wings to life after they are found lifeless having been burnt by a lamp and which the filmmaker decides to resuscitate by sticking the wings directly onto a 16 mm film and revealing the result without using a camera. The frenetic editing will enable the wings to once more emulate the lost flight and mixed with stills of leaves, puts the spectator in the place of a predator who has been fooled.
