Messages is an exploration of the different ages of written culture -paper, earth, stone, sand and glass serve as supports for texts- in which Sherwin works with free association (his daughter Maya’s drawings with a Hindu picture alphabet). In Instants, like in Messages, the hand, water or wind link the senses with another page and a text prefigured by the rhythms of the film. The screen as notebook, the word as image: in The Great Art of Knowing, Gatten blurs the distinction between writing and drawing, printed and written word, combining scientific treatises, instruction manuals, letters, reflections of birds and shadows of words.
