Panel session: Creativity and funding: balance and incidence in non-fiction cinema made by women

Panel session addressing questions related to funding documentary cinema and how this affects creativity and the presence of female film-makers who work in non-fiction cinema. They will also discuss various co-production opportunities in Navarre, the Basque Country and Aquitaine.

The panel will include representatives from the CIMA delegation in Navarre and (H)emen, moderated by Itziar García Zubiri.

 

AMAIA REMÍREZ GARCÍA | CIMA

Amaia has been a cinema producer and scriptwriter for over a decade. Her first feature-length film as a producer, Un día más con vida, made its debut in the Official Selection at Cannes, and won a European Film Award, a Goya and a Platino Award. The first short film that she produced with her company Kanaki Films, Minerita, won a Goya and was short-listed for the Oscars. She is currently producing several feature-length documentaries at Kanaki Films and co-directing Bayo Bayo Baby. She began directing with Maldita, the documentary short which won a Goya in 2023 and Silver Dragon Best Direction at Krakow IFF, which she codirected with her business partner Raúl de la Fuente.

GENTZANE MARTÍNEZ DE OSABA | (H)emen

After graduating in Audiovisual Communication at the University of the Basque Country, Gentzane specialised in audiovisual production at the IDEP graduate school in Barcelona. Once her studies were complete, she began to work in the world of cinema and television as an assistant on national and international documentaries and television channels such as the BBC. She also worked at EITB as a producer. In 2011, she founded MARMOKA FILMS; an independent production company which develops and produces documentaries that have been very well received by critics and at international festivals and have been distributed internationally. Marmoka’s latest works include TETUÁN, ALTSASU (GAU HURA), EL DROGAS and CHILLIDA ESKU HUTS. She current combines her production work with teaching. She is a part-time teacher in the Department of Audiovisual Communication at the UPV/EHU and she is writing her doctoral dissertation on executive production in Basque film-making from the point of view of gender studies.

ITZIAR GARCÍA ZUBIRI | Moderator

Creative producer, with over 20 years’ experience in Fiction and Documentaries for Cinema/Television, video-installations and festivals. For 12 years, she ran production for the majority of projects by the Navarrese production company Arena Comunicación, producing works such as Cholitas, Pura Vida or Muros. Working with directors such as Ainara Vera and Marina Lameiro in their first or second films, Hasta mañana si Dios quiere and Dardara respectively, both programmed in the opening session of the Punto de Vista Festival, in previous editions; she has filmed in around 30 countries, getting involved in the whole process from development to multi-outlet international distribution. Since 2021, working as a freelance professional, she has been combining development and production of Documentary and Fiction projects, working for producers such as Doxa Producciones or Kowalski Films, or on content for platforms such as Netflix or Movistar Plus+, providing mentoring and training for professionals and institutions.
