Round table on heritage documentary films

In partnership with the Cinéma du Réel festival (Paris) and the French Institute, a meeting to talk about the various policies for preserving, distributing and communicating legacy documentary cinema in France and Spain.

Participants: Gaël Teicher, Josetxo Cerdán, Ramiro Ledo and Inés Toharia.

GAËL TEICHER

Gaël Teicher is publisher at Editions de l'Œil, producer and distributor at La Traverse. Since the end of the 1990s, he has been working on the works of Patricia Mazuy, Marie-Claude Treilhou, Jean-Daniel Pollet, Laurent Achard, Luc Moullet, Johan van der Keuken, Jean Epstein, Pedro Costa, Paul Vecchiali, Jean-Claude Brisseau, Jean-Luc Godard and others. His real passions are cycling - with a soft spot for Laurent Fignon - rugby - Didier Codorniou - whisky, heat, «la Vivouza» and «Ask to the Dust». Which, fortunately, nobody cares about.

JOSETXO CERDÁN

Josetxo Cerdán Los Arcos has been a tenured professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (2003-2008) and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (2008-2015). He is currently a Full Professor at the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid. Between September 2018 and December 2022, he was director of the Filmoteca Española (Spain’s national film archive). Cerdán was also the director of the International Documentary Film Festival of Navarra. Punto de Vista (2010-2013) and has devised programmes for several national and international institutions such as the Locarno International Film Festival (2009); the Anthology Film Archive (2013); or the Lincoln Center (2014). 

RAMIRO LEDO

Founder and director of Atalante, a film distributor set up in 2021 whose catalogue combines independent film and contemporary arthouse cinema, first features and heritage films. He was the founding member, president and driving force behind the NUMAX cooperative from 2014, associated with the project until 2021, taking responsibility for the areas of exhibition, distribution and financial planning and management.

Since 2019, he has also been the managing director and programmer for DUPLEX Cinema, a project he has used to recover the only movie theatre currently operating in Ferrol (A Coruña). He is Vice-President of the Próxima, asociación de distribuidoras de cine independiente y de autor en versión original and President of the Promio, red de cines independientes. His work received the “Entrepreneur of the Year Award” at Europa 2020, awarded by Europa Cinemas.

INÉS TOHARIA

Inés Toharia is an independent researcher and film-maker. After studying literature and film, she did a master's degree in Creative Documentary at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and won a scholarship from La Caixa to train in film-making in the United Kingdom. She then specialised in film preservation at the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation (USA) with a Fulbright scholarship. She has directed documentaries and shorts, and worked in film archives and on preservation projects in the USA, Mexico, the UN and Spain. She helped to set up FiSahara, the Western Sahara international film festival, and has curated screenings and exhibitions. She has written about film history, has covered international festivals and has given classes and workshops. Her last documentary, shown in more than 30 countries, shows the international efforts to preserve audiovisual heritage.
