TOUR THROUGH REALITY

For many years, animation was erroneously considered too artificial a technique to be effectively applied to non-fiction. But the growing number of animated films portraying real stuff brings to question, once again, the issue of ‘objective’ representation. The emergence of new formats and techniques shows this is an apt medium to capture visions of the real in every genre, including documentaries. Realistic animation covers a wide range of fields, from educational or scientific films to propaganda (an area where animation has always played a relevant role) to personal film essays to reconstruction and augmented reality.

This year, Animac offers a tour of reality in its themed sections, screening works from different periods to show the creative potential of this ‘hybrid’ art. Recent short films drawing on all kinds of styles and techniques by such directors as Víctor Orozco, Hanna Heilborn or David Aaronovitch, alongside visionary classics by Norman McLaren or John and Faith Hubley, and feature films by directors like Isao Takahata or Marjane Satrapi, who have offered popular animated explorations of the real.
