Surviving a massacre and the destruction of his native village, Carapirú, Awa Guajá, runs away and spends ten years wandering about the far-off regions in Brazil. In November 2988, 2,000 kilometres away from the jungle he was forced to leave, he is found by an anthropologist specialising in indigenous cultures and taken to Brasilia, where Carapirú is turn into a media phenomenon. Blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction with an amazing sense of humour and a formal freedom verging on licentiousness, Serras da desordem is the reconstruction of Carapirú’s initial trip, picturing in his story the tragedy of a culture violated for the sake of an imaginary, brutal, progress.
Andrea Tonacci. Born in Rome in 1944, Tonacci moved to São Paulo with his family when he was 9. He has been living there since then. His passion for photography brought him to the world of movies: he was a film photographer and a director of photography before making his own short and medium-length documentaries. Tonacci was a pioneer in the use of video techniques in Brazil. In the 1970s he was part of the so-called “Marginal Film” movement. In 1970 he shot his only 35mm fiction film, Bang Bang, which was to become a reference of Latin American heterodoxy in film. Currently, Tonacci runs his own film production company, producing independent films.
