Every episode has an introduction by Jean-Louis Bory.

Espagnes is a three-episode series shot for French TV. The three episodes are centred on El Cid, Don Quixote and Don Juan, as José María Berzosa deconstructs the myths associated with them, used by the Franco regime to stand for eternal and universal values of Spanish culture. In his series, Berzosa dismantles the self-indulgent, clichéd views on these three characters.

In episode 1, a friar and an exile visit the places El Cid was in, following in his footsteps and interviewing the military men who are considered to be his descendants. From Burgos to Valencia, Berzosa shows how military feats are the only epic space (and spiritual spring) Spain has built for itself throughout history.
