In 1962, in the country city of Sapé, Paraíba, the peasant leader João Pedro Teixeira is executed by those affected by his attempt of organising the fieldworkers. In 1964, Eduardo Coutinho decided to make a movie recreating his life and the political ideas that led to his death. The shooting, featuring the peasants at Engenho Galiléia and João Pedro’s widow, Elizabeth Teixeira, was brought to a halt by the military coup d’etat on 31 March 1964. Seventeen years later, in 1981, Coutinho returned to the location to interview the survivors. The subject is now the lives of each of them, encouraged by the camera to review the images of the past. Elizabeth, who had gone into hiding in hinterland Rio Grande do Norte in 1964, had changed her name and was living with one of her ten children. The shooting took her out of her underground life and restored her identity as she struggled to rebuild her family life.
