|TIME WITHOUT US|
Direction: Hollis Frampton
(Nostalgia) between brackets and time in inverted commas. Frampton uses Michael Snow’s voice to tell us about his memories as stirred by old photos burning to ashes in a stove. The length of each tale is determined by fire. No images (or memories) can live longer than the fire burning them. A great metaphor of memory and time in film, reinforced by the dissociation introduced by a voice that never talks about the photo we are looking at, but rather about an image we have seen already or we are about to see. Thus, the whole thing has an air of anticipation or the opposite: reminiscence.
