Based on texts and ideas by: Andrés Solano, Arnoldo Galves Suarez, Martin Caparrós y Gunter Walraff

What does the word ‘democracy’ mean to the 50 million minimum-wage earners in Mexico today? What do we expect of democracy in present-day societies? What do we expect of politics beyond democracy? The economy affects the way we experience politics and our political expectations. Based on these premises, Tijuana portrays Gabino Rodríguez’s six-month experience as Santiago Ramírez, a resident in Tijuana, Baja California, far from his world, working in a local factory and earning the minimum wage. The film retells his experience as it explores the possibilities of performance. Being someone else, living someone else’s life, impersonating someone else... Isn’t that what acting is about?

(This project is part of La democracia en México 1965-2015/Democracy in Mexico 1965-2015) The project is carried out in collaboration with the live performing arts programme, PROKLAMA, and organised by AZALA and the Basque Contemporary Art Centre-Museum, Artium and dFeria.
