THE PERSONAL IS POLITICAL
RÉPONSE DE FEMMES (NOTRE CORPS, NOTRE SEXE)

Country: France
Year: 1975
Duration: 8'
Direction: Agnès Varda

The TV channel Antenne 2 asked a series of filmmakers to answer the question “What is a woman?” In this film-tract, or film pamphlet, Agnès Varda gives some answers. Against a white background, several women speak up against the oppressive myths that surround femininity and stage a repertoire of untapped possibilities. How can we experience our bodies? How can we experience sex?

Agnès Varda

Agnès Varda (born 30 May 1928) is a French film director and professor at European Graduate School. Her movies, photographs, and art installations focus on documentary realism, feminist issues, and social commentary — with a distinct experimental style. Films by Varda belonged to the Rive Gauche (Left Bank) cinema movement, along with Chris Marker, Alain Resnais, Marguerite Duras, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Jean Cayrol y Henri Colpi.
