Méditerranée is not the fulfilment of a project. It is a series of images filmed in the course of a ‘Mediterranean itinerary’, the sole concern being that each image should neither show nor mean more than a single thing, a single idea, such that it may be used as a word (which has no other meaning than that related to the place that we give it in a phrase). Every image in this film therefore forms part of a vocabulary. The filming having no other objective but to bring the ‘word-images’ of this vocabulary together, and the editing seeking to create ‘phrase-sequences’. This explains the reason for which the same shot is frequently used several times in sequences which are nevertheless very different, just as a word can reappear several times on the same page without necessarily giving the impression of repetition.” (JDP)
