Not far from Madrid there is the Valle de los Caidos, a memorial conceived by dictator Francisco Franco in the Fifties. This site is still today the symbol of an unresolved conflict within Spanish society. Under the cross lie 35,000 victims of the Spanish Civil War, while approximately 50 children study in the nearby boarding school: they receive an education that desperately tries to resist the drift towards secularism and scientism of contemporary Spain and of global society.
Alessandro Pugno
Alessandro Pugno (Casale Monferrato, Italia, 1983)
He studied philosophy in Bologna, where he began working as an assistant photographer. He then spent a few years travelling, an experience became the basis of his photo exhibit La giostra, which was held in Seville in 2005, and the collection of poems Fili d’oro tra le ortiche, which received a special mention at the Lorenzo Montano poetry prize in 2006. In 2008, he returned to Italy to create Papavero Films, with which he directed his first film, the documentary La culla delle aquile presented at various festivals, including the Trento Film Festival. In 2011, he directed The three distances (29th Torino Film Festival), an experimental documentary with the Italian painter Mario Surbone. In 2008 he attended a masterclass with Werner Herzog.
