Enock has been working in the landfill in Itaóca, São Gonçalo, 40 kilometres from Rio. He has lived off landfills across the country all his life. He has just turned 70, and he is quietly sipping at the coffee he has made with the beans from his own garden. Some of his neighbours do not trust him; they are familiar with the gossip associated with life in the landfill: babies born in the midst of rotten food, men fighting head-to-head with vultures for a scrap to make a living. Lucia wonders whether they do it for lack of courage, if the city is too violent and jobs are difficult to find; this way, at the end of the day, everyone has something to eat and something to do. Others, on the other hand, speak out for his trade; they know their opinion is as honourable as their job, and that misunderstandings are nothing but the lack of understanding and a matter of basic service.
