Calypso

Year1955 Duration4 min. DirectorMargaret Tait

Her first film, which is hand-painted directly on celluloid, is a kind of tropical anaemic cinema. Spirals, streamers, figures of primitive inspiration, abstracts or anthropomorphosis, dancing to the rhythm of this chromatic, frenetic and furiously-paced symphony. A man becomes a star and pollinates a flower, a boat escapes from a storm, Calypso has the enormous power of a first film, turning everything into a celebration.
