The smoke coming out of the chimneys welcomes the operators starting their shift at a metal works in Rustavi, Georgia. The cast iron boiler generates stifling heat in this industrial inferno, where there are also moments of relaxation to grab a drink of water, lunch or the cigarette break. In his first documentary work, Otar Iosseliani films a working day at the foundry where he worked between 1963 and 1964. He does so through a respectful look that emphasises the epic poem of the dignity of man against the elements.
