Introduction and Q&A with Nao Yoshigai (filmmaker) and Ekhiñe Etxeberria (film programmer).

After her mother's death, Nao Yoshigai retreats to a Zen temple, affected by the physical and mental scars of grief. In the film, her experience will oscillate between the dreamlike and the everyday, sleep and wakefulness, creating a space where pain is sustained and calm can begin to take shape.

Masayume is built from loss. From the body. From the need to relearn basic gestures such as eating, sleeping, and breathing. Starting from the trauma of a mother's death, the film explores the physical and mental somatisations of its protagonist and situates itself in a suspended time, between sleep and wakefulness. This allows time to stretch and scenes to breathe. Said suspension directly relates to the meaning of the title, where what happens in a dream ends up taking place in real life.

Perhaps because of the director's relationship with dance, the film is constructed like a choreography that attempts to bring together fragments of a life marked by loss. An open form, without a marked structure, in which she makes use of an eclectic language. In this flow, more abstract scenes arise, with objects and bodies in rotation, referring to an idea of the body as living and changing matter, coexisting with the rigidity and silence of the Zen centre, as well as with the images and gestures of everyday life. A continuous movement that links one sequence of her life to another, creating an intimate film permeated by delicacy and beauty that does not seek to end the pain, but to sustain it and allow it to exist as a way of approaching calm.
