Normal Autistic Film

Year2016 Duration90 min. DirectorMiroslav Janek

Far from being just another film on autism, this film does not present the autistic as different people, but presents us, as spectators, as beings that are too similar. The Czech filmmaker, Miroslav Janek, achieves this regression that already starts with the title of the film: normalising film means normalising the portrayal. Here, there is no monitoring through parents or carers. There is no medical or scientific analysis, etc. What there is here is a true film that carries only the stars on its back and nobody else: young people with hobbies who de-dramatise their daily life with their humour and desires. Using a direct visual style and a casual pace in the editing, often accompanied by some piano notes, this choral portrait of a group of autistic teenagers challenges us to enter the screen and cross their mirror.
