Elia Urquiza, Daniel Cuberta and creative duo weareQQ, guest filmmakers in the 2nd edition of X Films Project

Daniel Cuberta lives in Seville. He has have spent a lot of time experimenting and playing with formats, techniques, and technologies. As he says, “now it seems to have been a long time ago. What I do they call ‘video creation,’ a term that means nothing. But I liked to think about it as a mixture, as something which was always in the making, after a call for documenting, for story-telling, the rash love of representations, songs, or puns. Elia Urquiza (Pamplona, 1979) made her first documentary, “De Carmen a Carmen,” within her Master’s Programme in Creative Documentary Film at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Since then, she has written, shot, and edited many films, often at the crossroads of documentary and fiction. In 2005, she took part in the group documentary project “Entre el dictador y yo.” In 2006, she paid tribute to two of her favourite directors, Victor Erice  and Abbas Kiarostami, in “Historia de un niño,” shown in their exhibition at Barcelona’s Centre de Cultura Contemporània (CCCB). Granted a scholarship from Fundación “la Caixa” in 2007, she entered the Film Directing Programme at CalArts, the California Institute of the Arts, where she was able to tap into fiction film. In 2010, she got a grant from Príncipe de Viana Institution to complete here graduate studies in Los Angeles, under the tutorship of Monte Hellman.

Vicente Vázquez (Tarragona, 1976) and Usue Arrieta (Arrasate, 1979) met in Cuenca and began working together in 2003, under the name “weareQQ.” Together, they have developed a multi-disciplinary body, based on exercises redefining social spaces that may determine political, ideological, and economic aspects of the given everyday environment –a way of creating, through videos, installations, and interventions in public space, new possibilities for people to relate to their contexts. Their work has been on display at art centres like Centro de Arte Juan Ismael, CA2M, or Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid and galleries such as Nogueras Blanchard or Àngels Barcelona, among others. Their videos have been shown at Centro Galego de Artes da Imaxe (CGAI), La noche en blanco, La Casa Encendida, and international festivals in Las Palmas, Ourense, and Mexico City (FMX). They have been artists in residence in Barcelona (Fábrica de Creación Fabra i Coats), Bilbao (BilbaoArte), and Rosario, Argentina (El Levante). They have received grants from Barcelona Producció, Can Xalant, Injuve, and Agadic and conducted workshops in cultural centres in Spain, Argentina, and Peru.
