Ignacio Agüero: ice dreams

Ignacio Agüero is an architect turned film-maker who cannot help being an architect as he struggles to stop being a film-maker. A tough but productive battle. Como me da la gana is his most honest declaration, made in 1985, where he goes to individual directors to ask them why they make cinema and for what purpose, without getting a clear response from anyone, and without Agüero himself knowing why he is making this film-question. As an architect, space slips into almost all his projects; sometimes it is an area of Santiago that disappears and buries the last of his shipwrecked souls in Aquí se construye, at others it is a village populated with more memories than inhabitants, as in La mamá de mi abuela le contó a mi abuela, and at other times it is that no-man’s land that constitutes the threshold of the front door in El otro día. As a film-maker, Ignacio Agüero declares that he dreams of achieving a film in which the film-maker disappears and it is the film that constructs itself. Self-architecture, then. The solution arrives when he puts a cheap but effective scriptwriter known as ‘chance’ to work. In “a film made about the people who ring the doorbell of my house”, the Chilean director decides to turn his gaze back on anyone who calls at his home, and manages to show us two worlds: the inside world with its whimsical lights and dense shadows, and the outside world of a Santiago sketched in the best way: involuntarily.

Pema Tseden, old snow

Animals are the best way of qualifying the cinema of Pema Tseden. In his latest film, Old Dog, dedicated to an old mastiff sheepdog prized by urban mafias, there is a foundational moment in his career as a film-maker: A sheep gets separated from the flock by a fence and, in one long shot, it tries to find a gap through which it can get back. The lost sheep runs to and fro in desperation around the fence that holds it, while the other sheep move off into the distance towards the horizon, and are gradually lost from view. A long shot lasting minutes, where no one says Cut or Action, and where reality bursts through with its full enigmatic charge. The Tibetan director insists: “I make works of fiction, not documentaries”, but the wayward sheep decries this: when reality knocks, the mise-en-scène disappears, and the shot is held until required by reality. False fiction in that case.

A photograph by the Polish artist Marcin Ryczek will be the image of the second edition of the Punto de Vista International Seminar

The second edition of the Punto de Vista International Seminar has its Billboard for the forthcoming edition. Since the festival of 2007, an image by a professional photographer has been used to illustrate each edition and on this occasion, a detail from the photographic work A Man Feeding Swans in the Snow by Marcin Ryczek has been chosen. The Polish photographer has transferred the rights to this photograph to the seminar for use as the image of the second edition, which will be held in Pamplona from 19th to 20th February 2014. Sharon Lockhart, Clemente Bernard, Matías Costa, Ellen Koi, Vicent Fournier, Aaron Huey and Bill Brown have collaborated as photographers in previous editions.

Carte blanche for the Punto de Vista festival in Cerbère

Patrick Viret, director of the Rencontres Cinématographiques in Cerbère-Portbou, in which the best documentary film festivals in France have been participating for over a decade, has decided to include the Punto de Vista Festival in future editions. This event takes place every October in the historic Hotel Belvédère du Rayon Vert in the French border town. At this event, each festival chooses one short film and one feature-length film from among those shown at its own programmes, two outstanding offerings to present that year to audiences at Cerbère-Portbou. Cinéma du Réel del Centro Pompidou, FID Marseille, and Cinémaginaire de Argelès-sur-mer are regular contributors to this event, which also features L´Alternativa del CCCB-Barcelona.
