The Basque filmmaker, Aitor Gametxo, will present the world première of his film, The Other Map of Abauntz, produced by the Punto de Vista Festival within the framework of the X Films Project. It will be screened on Saturday 14th February at 8pm in the Gola Hall at Baluarte.

The film, with a running time of 60 minutes, was produced in 2014 after Gametxo was the filmmaker selected by X Films Project in the 2014 edition of the Punto de Vista International Seminar.

On reading the news about the incredible finding of the first map of Western Europe in Abauntz cave in Navarra, the filmmaker went into the nearest town, Arraitz (Ultzama Valley), to trace another map with his own hands and those of others he encounters. It is a contemporary map which combines not to be missed festivities, daily rituals and future traditions. But, he soon realises that what he is making is not just one map. In reality, there are two. Or at least two.

Born in Lekeitio, Aitor Gametxo is a photographer and independent filmmaker living in Barcelona, where he is currently studying Sign Language. After graduating in Audiovisual Communication between Bilbao and Barcelona, his interest in non-fiction film led him to study a Master’s Degree in Creative Documentary from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (2011-2012). During these studies, he co-directed his first documentary work, The Typographic City (2012), alongside Igone Arreitunandia,), followed by Poetic Dictionary of Spoken Images (Irudi mintzatuen hiztegi poetikoa, 2013), alongside Maria Elorza and Maider Fernandez (Pasaik Girls).

His works, with a strong documentary vocation, often combine formal experimentation and the most conventional narrative discourse, seek the universal in the personal through the use of resources such as first person perspective or auto-fiction, and include metalinguistic resources to show the film artefact. He has worked as an audiovisual technician in Tabakalera, Contemporary Culture International Centre, and as a production assistant at RTVE Catalunya. El otro mapa de Abauntz adds to a filmography formed by Variation on the sunbeam (2011), La ciutat tipogràfica (La ciudad tipográfica, 2012), Irudi mintzatuen hiztegi poetikoa (Diccionario poético de imágenes habladas, 2013), Soinu galduen bila (En busca de los sonidos perdidos, 2014) y Bere bizitzetako bat (Una de sus vidas, 2014).

Punto de Vista started X Films Project in 2010 in order to offer emerging Spanish documentary makers the opportunity to shoot in Navarre an essay-like form audiovisual creation. Punto de Vista recovers the spirit of the Navarre X Films producer, founded by Juan Huarte in 1963 with the idea of producing films that “show a singular artistic interest or represent special values” and specialized in risky productions, betting by most innovative, ambitious and experimental films, until 80s, when the film producer disappeared.
