21 documentary films will compete in the Official Selection of the 12th edition of Punto de Vista

The Official Selection is full of pioneers and searches, stories on social instabilities, poetry and reflections on the role of art, estrangement in the face of nature, migratory movements and the territorial identity, revolutionary desires, the intimacy of human relations, the vestiges of urban trade, the generational portrait or the passage of time.

For the first time, two films made by filmmakers from Navarra will compete in Punto de Vista, following the presence of Converse in last year’s edition, with which the filmmaker from Navarra, David Arratibel, won the Audience Award. These two films are YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL, by Marina Lameiro, and YOURS TRULY, co-directed by Maddi Barber. There will also be films from Brazil, India, United States, United Kingdom, Chile, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Lebanon, Qatar, Latvia and Portugal.

Each of these twenty-one films has been chosen for its aesthetic quality and as a unique and complementary formal contribution to the others, within the field of experimental documentary. This section features films associated with reality, contemporary and poetic things. This films are varied thematically and formally, and are not satisfied with just telling. Instead, they debate and deal with the search for a new point of view. For many of them, it will also be their world, European or Spanish premiere.

The Selection Committee is made up of the festival’s Artistic Director, Garbiñe Ortega, as well as Nuria Cubas, Matías Piñeiro, María Palacios Cruz and Aitor Gametxo.

PRIZES AT THE 12TH EDITION OF PUNTO DE VISTA

The Official Jury will award the following prizes:

▪ “Punto de Vista” First Prize for the Best Film, with €10,000 in prize money. The prize will go to the film that the jury considers to be the best in the festival’s Official Section, regardless of its duration or nationality.

▪ Jean Vigo Prize for the Best Director, with €5,000 in prize money. The prize honours the figure of Jean Vigo and will be awarded to the film in the Official Section that best represents the ethical and formal values that represent his work.

▪ Prize for the Best Short Film, with €3,000 in prize money. The prize will be awarded to the best film with a duration of 35 minutes or less.

There are also the following special prizes:

▪ Special Audience Prize for the Best Film, with €1,650 in prize money.

▪ Youth Prize for the Best Film, with €1,500 in prize money.

MEMBERS OF THE INTERNATIONAL JURY OF PUNTO DE VISTA 

REBECCA BARON

Rebecca Baron is a filmmaker, curator and professor based in Los Angeles. She is best known for her essay films. She is co-curator of @SEA, a multi-disciplinary program at the Poetic Research Bureau in LA. Her award-winning works have been screened extensively including the Whitney Biennial, Documenta, Rotterdam, London, Toronto, Oberhausen, Ann Arbor and New York film festivals. She has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Radcliffe School of Advanced Study. Since 2000 she has been on the faculty of the Program in Film and Video at CalArts.

FRAN GAYO

He was the programmer of the Gijón Film Festival between 1997 and 2009. In 2010, he moved to Buenos Aires to join the BAFICI team, where he has formed part of the programming team until 2017. In Buenos Aires, he also progranmes the cartoon festival, EXPOTOONS, as well as being responsible for the Espanoramas event, organised by the CCEBA along with the ICAA.

Since 2012, he has been the film programmer at the Niemeyer Centre and has been a member of the jury at festivals such as San Sebastian, Valdivia, Curtocircuito or the Transcinema in Lima.

He has been the artistic director of the Ourense International Film Festival / OUFF in 2016 and 2017.

PAOLO MORETTI

Paolo Moretti worked for several film festivals and film institutions in Europe, including the Pompidou Center, Filmoteca Española, Cinemateca Portuguesa and Cinéma du Réel. From 2008 to 2011, he was the director's assistant and program advisor at the Venice Film Festival. In 2012 and 2013 program advisor for the Rome Film Festival (CinemaXXI). Since 2012 Selection Committee member of FIDMarseille and Selection Committee member, then program advisor, for Visions du Réel (Nyon). He is the associate producer of the American independent feature "L for Leisure" by Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn. Since 2014 he is the director of the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival and of the Concorde art house film theater.

NICOLAS PEREDA

Nicolás Pereda has directed 12 films. He usually works with the theatre company Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol as well as with actress Teresa Sánchez. He has shown his work in film festivals in Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Locarno, Rotterdam and Toronto; in museums such as MoMA, Guggenheim, Reina Sofía and City of Paris Museum of Modern Art. More than 25 retrospectives of his work have been shown in different festivals, film libraries and film archives.
