Punto de Vista is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the protests of 1968 with a subversive selection of films which aim to establish new languages of protest and defiance

The programme consists of five sessions screening films shot in the 1960s to remind us of those years and others which probe the future in search of a new way of looking at reality.

Under the title Nuevas Resistencias Post 68, this year’s Punto de Vista is scheduling films which strive to ‘turn around’ (this is, after all, the etymological origin of the word revolution) the way cinema is made. The festival’s artistic director, Garbiñe Ortega, explains it like this: ‘the filmmakers in this programme show us that there exists a highly aware form of cinema that questions what we look at and where we look at it from with a force both stunning and exciting in equal measures. Their vibrant, thoughtful cinema pushes the formal limits while demanding respect and dignity for the human experience.’

The programme consists of 5 sessions and 15 films which, Ortega says, are ‘extremely necessary, which fight against our idle cynicism and paralyzing credulity with their hands, with broken voices, with their bodies, with the soul.’ The films include essays which ask what really happened in 1968 (No intenso agora), films shot from the midst of the protests in which "the bullets can be heard" (as in the case of those by bêlit šag, Hiwa K or Los Ingrávidos) and a selection of the sharp, intelligent, socially committed films made by three key figures in Spanish Cinema: Virginia García del Pino, María Cañas and Luis López Carrasco.

Half a century on from those historic days, Punto de Vista wishes to remember them, not as a retrospective, but as a “counterpoint against which to think about the intense here and now we are living through, about this revolution which needs to rid itself of the historical burden of 1968 in order to establish new languages of protest and defiance.’ So states the festival’s artistic director, Garbiñe Ortega, inviting the public to see these films and assuring them that ‘Punto de Vista would like to change all this as well.’
