Punto de Vista reaches new audiences in its 2018 edition
03/15/2018
The festival sees an edition which has been well received by the public, shown a commitment to feminism and supported local filmmakers in a very positive light.

The International Documentary Film Festival of Navarra Punto de Vista regards the outcome of its twelfth edition, which came to a close on Sunday the 10th of March, as ‘very positive’. The artistic director Garbiñe Ortega points out that ‘the response to the new areas of work, such as the educational programme or “Dokbizia”, has been very good and the objective of taking the festival to other venues has surpassed all expectations, with full houses in the Planetarium, the Magazine, the Gayarre Theatre, Civican, the Navarra Film Library, Katakrak and the laboratory held in the Huarte Contemporary Art Centre. Such a wide variety of spaces and events has meant a more plural festival, because the 2018 edition has attracted non-film buff and family audiences, as well as people from other artistic fields.’ Ortega also stresses the provenance of the audience, ‘from all around Europe, [people] who have come to attend the analogue film screenings in the “Correspondencias” programme, which in its seven sessions has featured a number of films never shown in Spain before.’

Filmmakers from Navarra and the Basque Country have also been well represented at Punto de Vista. The official section screened films by the Navarrese directors Maddi Barber and Marina Lameiro. The opening session also included a film by the Pamplona-born filmmaker Ainara Vera. These three directors started out in the Punto de Vista audience and this year actually appeared in it, as previously occurred with Okar Alegría and David Arratibel.
The new section ‘Paisaia’ featured work by Arantza Santesteban, Irati Gorostidi, Koldo Almandoz, Jaione Camborda (who also shot this year’s intro), Jesús María Palacios, Íñigo Jiménez and Inés García.

The festival has shown a commitment to gender equality and feminism, with more female than male directors in this year’s Official Section. Punto de Vista got involved in International Women’s Day on the 8th of March, the fourth day of the festival, with a specific programme which included world-renowned artists like Trinh Minh-ha, Marta Selva, Idoia Zabaleta, Arantza Santesteban, Lizzie Olesker and Lynne Sachs.

7,846 people participated in the activities organised at the different venues in the city and surrounding area. The Baluarte Auditorium attracted 5,302 people to the screenings in the Official Section and parallel sessions, conferences, presentations, performances and the exhibition ‘Reunión de ajenos o casi’, with collages by Dani Sanchis, the artist who designed this year’s poster.

The response to the different programmes in the festival has also been very good, with numerous sessions enjoying full houses: practically every session in the ‘Correspondencias: Películas como cartas’ and ‘Nuevas Resistencias Post 68’ programmes; the matinée session of ‘Young & Beautiful’ (Audience’s Prize); the premiere of ‘La cosa vuestra’ by María Cañas (2017 X Films Project); P. Adams Sitney’s seminar sessions, the Trinh T. Minh-ha programme and both the opening and closing sessions ‘Hasta mañana si dios quiere’ and ‘The Sound We See: A Pamplona City Symphony’, with music by Maite Arroitajauregi (Mursego) and Harkaitz Cano.

The Gayarre Theatre received 254 members of the public for the show ‘Tijuana’ and the ‘La Naturaleza y su temblor’ walks by Tomás Aragay and Idoia Zabaleta. Some twenty people went to the Huarte Contemporary Art Centre to take part in the laboratory ‘The Sound We See’ conducted by Lisa Marr and Paolo Davanzo, members of the Echo Park Film Center (Los Angeles). P. Adams Sitney’s conference ‘Eyes Upside Down’ attracted 65 people to the Navarra Film Library. 180 people attended the two sessions held in the Planetarium, a new venue for Punto de Vista, and 84 took part in the workshop run by the Drac Magic collective in Civican. More than 400 people participated in the activities organised by the bookshop Katakrak: P. Adams Sitney’s and Trinh T. Minh-ha’s book presentations, and the recording of Radio 3’s ‘El Séptimo Vicio’, hosted by Javier Tolentino, with unplugged performances by Doctor Deseo, Niño de Elche (both attracting capacity audiences) and Las Kasettes.

The restaurant Casa Manolo received 200 guests for the working lunches it laid on. 250 people went to the closing cocktail in the Medialuna bar, while the evening events in Nébula and Nicolette, with performances by DJs, drew 700.

MEDIA COVERAGE

The festival organisers highlight the extensive media coverage that the twelfth edition has enjoyed, contributing decisively to the image of Pamplona and Navarra in the rest of Spain and abroad, and strengthening the standing of the Punto de Vista Festival as a date on the country’s cultural agenda.

Radio 3 (Spanish National Radio) participated again as the festival’s official broadcaster with four special editions of its programme ‘El Séptimo Vicio’ devoted to Punto de Vista and broadcast from Pamplona. These programmes were recorded in the Katakrak bookshop, which collaborated with the festival, and included acoustic concerts, attracting large audiences and standing out as one of the most successful secondary activities on the festival agenda.
