Dokbizia brings to Punto de Vista the meeting point between languages and artists working on the real

Niño de Elche, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Xabier Erkizia, Idoia Zabaleta, Ixiar Rozas and Érik Bullot will be among the artists displaying their work at this inter-disciplinary meeting which brings together film-makers, theorists, sound artists, writers and 'performers' under the premise that 'the voice never lies'.

Punto de Vista revives Dokbizia, an inter-disciplinary meeting that sets out to create a meeting point between languages and artists working around the real. This programme, which deals with the documentary on and off the screen, proposes an itinerary in various formats: film showings, performance talks, stage and site-specific pieces and performance, and features film-makers, visual artists, writers and performers.

"The voice never lies," states the eclectic New York artist Meredith Monk, a point of view that explains this year's programme at Punto de Vista, to be held in Pamplona from 11th to 16th March 2019. The voice is the universal channel but also an individual instrument with infinite nuances, textures and tones, which sometimes contains meaning and other times proposes new forms of communication other than the word.

This series proposes an inter-disciplinary meeting to bring together film-makers, theorists, sound artists, writers and performers under Monk's premise, a statement that is both thought-provoking and provocative.

The audience will have the chance to see the experimental session Los aires llevan mentiras (The Breeze Carries Lies) by Niño de Elche; the film and forensic listening research of the Lebanese artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan; the whispered cinema of the writer Ixiar Rozas in El mapa no es el paisaje (The Map Is Not A Landscape); the mantras on contemporary ills and their cures offered by the dancer Idoia Zabaleta in the stage piece Tengo Tiempo (I Have Time); the proposal of “film for the ears” at the session on La voz como interferencia (Voice As Interference) by the sound artist and curator Xabier Erkizia; the performance talk En voz alta (Aloud) by the French film-maker and theorist Érik Bullot; and the talk Amor Mundi, by the writer and academic Erika Balsom, all of which make up this expanded programming series.

Contemporary practices are increasingly impure in their formal approach to working with reality. DOKBIZIA aims to invite practices and discourses from other fields, which would not otherwise meet, to exchange, reflect on and live the experience of the real from different angles.

TUESDAY 12TH MARCH

8.00pm Xabier Erkizia. Voice as interference. Sound film session.

Blind, infantile, fantastic, cosmic, melted, multiplied, diluted, whispered, amplified, projected, folded, excited, recreated... The principal basis of theories of communication lies in the voice and is constructed in the word. The spoken, vocalised and reasoned word is the centre point around which all ideas of understanding revolve, the place where meaning lies. Works by Alex Mendizábal, Paul Sharits, Alessandro Bossetti and Lionel Marchetti, among others.

WEDNESDAY 13TH MARCH

5.00pm Erika Balsom. Amor mundi: Documentary, Contemporary Art, and the Descriptive Power of Lens-Based Capture

At least since Okwui Enwezor's Documenta 11 in 2002, documentary practices have played a major role in contemporary art. This presentation will identify and establish a diagnosis of a key trend in recent theorising about the documentary emerging from this scenario: the denigration of superficial appearance.

8.00pm Ixiar Rozas. El mapa no es el paisaje (The Map Is Not The Landscape)

The action of whispering almost inaudibly. Whispering is a form of the voice. The voice is intimately connected to the ways in which we become subjects. The voice and the mouth, its organ, whose surfaces and movements give rise to a host of vocalisations and mouthings.

THURSDAY 14TH MARCH

5.00pm Idoia Zabaleta. Tengo tiempo (from the series Top Mantras).

On this occasion we will be instrumentalising the word time, not without first having crushed the word man - and we will see what form the crushing takes. Like one of those verbena poultices that you put on your throat to relieve angina.

5.00pm Lawrence Abu Hamdan. Film programme.

Programme devoted to the audiovisual work of the Lebanese artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan, who works on forensic listening. It will include the films:

  • Double take: leader of the Syrian revolution commanding a charge
  • Walled unwalled
  • Rubber coated steel
  • The all-hearing

8.30pm Niño de Elche. The airs carry lies. Performance.

Gypsy singing, long singing, singing belongs to someone, worn voice, sharp voice, voice like that, husky voice, singing the voice, storyline voice, ideal voice, song written with mistakes, personal singing?, spelling, the monkey sings from memory, singing by law, mouth voice, own voice?, imaginary voice, painting the voice, peeling the voice, wild voice, trusted voice, spiritual voice, voice with a story, bastard singing, regulated singing, free singing, stolen voice, ghostly singing, spectral voice, rubbish singing or real singing, giving song, common voice? fire singing, physical voice, space voice, thought-out voice, reflected voice, little song or big song, speechless voice, unique voice?, singing without a mouth, truly lying voice.

Or as the popular Spanish song goes, "Los aires llevan mentiras y el que diga que no miente que diga que no respira": "The breeze carries lies and let anybody who says otherwise tell you he doesn't breathe."

FRIDAY 15TH MARCH

5.00pm Érik Bullot. Out loud. Performance talk.

Èrik Bullot will be offering a fun philosophical reflection on the job of the translator in film, their voice, their physical or virtual presence, playing with the images projected, the use of different languages (Spanish, French and English) and simultaneous translation.
