The winning project will be made into an audiovisual essay in Navarra and premièred at the 2023 edition of the festival.

Every year since 2010, Punto de Vista has invited three film-makers to present a documentary essay project to be shot in Navarra. The X Films project takes its name from the Navarrese production company founded by Juan Huarte in 1963, with the idea of promoting films of "singular artistic interest", in which artistic film-makers like Jorge Oteiza, Néstor Basterretxea, Rafael Ruiz Balerdi and José Antonio Sistiaga took their first steps, among many other creative talents. By returning to that spirit of sponsorship, the festival acts as a producer to offer rising film-makers the chance to create a new piece of work, at the same time bringing new voices on the non-fiction scene to the Navarra region.

This year Blanca Camell Galí, Hugo Amoedo and Magdalena Orellana have been invited to present propositions. The jury, to be announced shortly, will select one of the projects, to be made between April 2022 and March 2023, as a personal essay lasting at least twenty minutes. The film will be shown at the seventeenth edition of Punto de Vista.

The audience will also have the chance to see a session featuring some of the previous work by this year's candidates, as well as attending the presentation and defence of their projects at a dynamic session open to dialogue.

In 2021 the winning project was San Simón 62, by Irati Gorostidi. While the film was in production, another film-maker, Mirari Echávarri, joined the project as co-director. This reminds us that artistic projects are living things that mutate, and authorship is not a static, unilateral matter. San Simón 62 is to have its world première at this year's festival.

X Films project 2021: San Simón 62

In the 80s a monastery in Lizaso (Navarra) housed the eccentric Arco Iris (Rainbow) community. The building's anodyne walls were decorated with enormous floral motifs and its halls hosted large gatherings to experiment with new age-style cathartic practices. Today the building is home to a closed community of monks and that episode has left almost no traces. The authors of San Simón 62 go there following the testimony of their mothers who, trying to cast off the aftermath of the Franco dictatorship and deal with the personal and political challenges of this new period in Spanish history, spent time in the Arco Iris community.

Punto de Vista, the international documentary film festival of Navarra, is backed by the government of Navarra and organised entirely by the public company NICDO.
