Letters as Films

This book is the result of a project which got under way in 2018 with the publication of Correspondencias: cartas como películas (edited by Garbiñe Ortega and Francisco Algarín Navarro) and which ever since has continued to bring together fascinating letters written between filmmakers to trace connections and unforeseen relationships with the aim of drawing new cinematographic genealogies and families. This year, in collaboration with La Fábrica, Punto de Vista publishes a second volume of correspondences, edited by Garbiñe Ortega, now focusing on contemporary filmmakers understood as artists who have been active until relatively recently: Robert Frank, Gunvor Nelson, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Richard Linklater, Tsai Ming-liang, among others.
 
It is a book which can be read in different ways, proposing relations between letters and images, time leaps, non-explicit thematic sub-chapters, small sequenced tributes — such as the one dedicated to Harun Farocki or to a generation of American Avant Garde film (Barbara Hammer, Chick Strand, Stan Brakhage, Carolee Schneemann) — and imaginary epistles written for this project by the filmmakers of today (such as Mariano Llinás, Ana Vaz and Deborah Stratman) to historical filmmakers, deceased or alive, who they have never met.
