For Ahmed Bouanani (1938-2011), writing this book sprang from an exercise of responsibility in which he felt he felt obliged to engage. Nobody had ever written down - or would ever write - this story. Unfortunately, the project was set aside for a long time. Thirty-three years later, La septième porte (The Seventh Door) finally appeared, thanks to the combined efforts of many people dedicated to both studying Bounani's work and restoring the memory of Moroccan film.
The Seventh Door is a hybrid text of enormous spirit. It is a history book that reads like a thriller, the exciting story of a birth strewn with obstacles, the unfinished birth of a national cinema. It is, in short, the story of the dedicated search, filled with pitfalls, for an art able to honour collective memory and at the same time shape images of a shared future.
This edition also contains a set of appendices that provide an exhaustive record of Moroccan film history from 1907 to 1986.
