El otro mapa de Abauntz

Country: Spain
Year: 2014
Duration: 60'
Direction: Aitor Gametxo
Writer: Aitor Gametxo
Editor: Aitor Gametxo
Production: Festival de cine Punto de Vista

On reading the news about the incredible finding of the first map of Western Europe in Abauntz cave in Navarra, the filmmaker goes into the nearest town, Arraitz (Ultzama Valley), to trace another map with his own hands and those of others he encounters. It is a contemporary map which combines not to be missed festivities, daily rituals and future traditions. But, he soon realises that what he is making is not just one map. In reality, there are two. Or at least two.

Aitor Gametxo

Aitor Gametxo(Lekeitio, Basque Country, 1989)
Photographer and independent filmmaker, living in Barcelona, he is currently studying sign language interpreting there. After graduating in Audiovisual Communication between Bilbao and Barcelona, his interest in non-fiction film led him to study a Master’s Degree in Creative Documentary from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (2011-2012). During these studies, he co-directed his first documentary work, The Typographic City (2012), alongside Igone Arreitunandia,), followed by Poetic Dictionary of Spoken Images (Irudi mintzatuen hiztegi poetikoa, 2013), alongside Maria Elorza and Maider Fernandez (Pasaik Girls). His works, with a strong documentary vocation, often combine formal experimentation and the most conventional narrative discourse, seek the universal in the personal through the use of resources such as first person perspective or auto-fiction, and include metalinguistic resources to show the film artefact. He has worked as an audiovisual technician in Tabakalera, Contemporary Culture International Centre, and as a production assistant at RTVE Catalunya.
